Perhaps you have already heard in our churches this magnificent and famous organ work "Carillon de Longpont" by Louis VIERNE?
The carillon of the Longpont church was destroyed in 1917. Partially reconstructed in 1923, one of the bells was not replaced, and another does not correspond to the notes of the original chimes. The famous air can therefore no longer be played.
Some enthusiasts have decided to create the ARSCL: Association for the Renaissance of the Carillon Ring of Longpont.
We invite you to participate in this beautiful adventure.
A little history
Perhaps you have already heard the magnificent and famous piece for organ, the “Carillon of Longpont” by Louis Vierne, played in church?
At the beginning of the 20th century, Louis Vierne was the organist of Notre Dame of Paris. A great friend of the Montesquiou family, he was regularly invited to the Château in Longpont in the month of August. The 15th August was an especially important religious festival. There was a grand procession through the village, and through the grounds of the Château. Louis Vierne naturally contributed to the festivities. A harmonium was fixed to a cart pulled by two donkeys; safely installed on this mobile stage, he accompanied the singing, and added brilliant improvisations.
On hearing the four church bells on the 15th August 1913, Louis Vierne was inspired to write the “Carillon de Longpont”. It was later dedicated to his brother René Vierne, killed on the 29th May 1918, not far from Longpont.
The church bells of Longpont were destroyed in 1917. Partially reconstructed in 1923, they no longer have the same notes as the original chimes, and the famous carillon can no longer be played.
Enthusiasts have decided to found the ARSCL: the Association for the Restitution of the Chimes of Longpont.
Objective of the Association: to reinstate the four notes of the chimes of Longpont heard by Louis Vierne, and thus to breathe new life into the soundscape of the village.
Implementation: to reinstate the notes of the “Carillon de Longpont” by using two of the existing bells; two additional bells are required. Research has been conducted to verify the feasibility of the project.
All members of the association and all donors will be invited to the inauguration of Carillon.
